Interview Paper

For this paper I was asked to interview a member of the community involved in leading outdoor recreation. The interview discussed the field, the benefits, the challenges, and the successes. I chose to interview Paul Ledet, a Math and Outdoor Pursuits teacher at Stelly's Secondary School. Paul has been a huge mentor and role model in my life, as well as many other students.

Smile Uvic!

Smile Uvic was created by a group of six students (including myself) in a thrid year recreation mangement class. We were tasked to take $20 and make a sustainable difference for our target group of choice.

Our group came together with the common goal of wanting to bring people together and to put it simply make them happy!

As we were approaching exam period in November we decided a great target audience would be the students of Uvic as they were stressed from exams, and down with the winter blues.

The Smile Board was built with all donated materials and with permission was put on display outside of the campus library for an entire day. As sudents walked by they were encouraged to leave something on the board that makes them happy, or that would make someone else happy, such as a quote, a picture, etc. They were also told that they could take something from the board that would make them happy throughout the day. However most students wanted to leave everything on the board for everyone to enjoy!

Throughout the day the Hula Love club come by and inspired students to try out the hoop, while others were happy to just sit with us, read the board and enjoy the rare winter sunshine!

The Smile Board has since been used twice during other events at Uvic, and has inspired similar projects with different groups. The feedback from all campus members, students and faculty alike, has been nothing but positive, and the board will hopefully be used in years to come!

P.S. As all materials were dontated for the board we used the $20 to buy candy for people who stopped by and the remainder was dontated to The Wish Foundation.

Footprints - The Outdoor Avengers

As a group project for Program Planning myself and two group members created a pretend outdoor adventure company called 'Footprints'. After completing a community needs assessment we created a youth catered outdoor program called The Outdoor Avengers. Our paper describes what the program offers, the budget, equipement required, examples of advertising, risk assesments, waivers, job postings and interview questions, and parent information packages.

Leadership Experience Report

As a part of my leadership class we were required to volunteer with any organization in the community that we were interested in. From that experience we linked leadership concepts from the class to the challenges and experiences we had in the community. I choose to work with the Boulders Climbing Gym's youth teams as I  was already involved there. However, I took the opportunity to introduce new concepts to the gym that I had been wanting to tryout for a while. My goal was to develop more kinship between the different teams by hosting events and activities that were outside of the climbing curriculum. I was able to hold two events, one at the beginning of the school year as a 'Welcome Back' social. The kids made tie-dye climbing outfits, and participated in an epic relay race. The second event was held at Wildplay Element Parks and encouraged the kids to work together and bond as they were challenged by the arial obstacle course. My report details the planning of these events as well as the challenges and what I learned from the experience.
